Week of 4/26 – Race & Computing
Posted in Lecture notes, prof post on April 25th, 2010 by admin – Be the first to commentThis week we start reading Stuck in the Shallow End (Intro and chapters 1-2). This is a study of three California schools and the differences in computer science classes among them. The book starts by explaining the swimming analogy – that African Americans are drastically underrepresented in the sport of swimming for specific historical and contextual reasons. Similarly, there are some key reasons for minority underrepresentation in science and computing. This book gives us a thorough and specific look at why that is, and what we might do about it.
