Final Exam – 9:45am this Mon 12/13

The final is a comprehensive exam of all our work this semester – it will be 100 multiple choice and short-answer questions.  It will draw from all course readings, lectures, videos, study guides, class discussions, and student presentations.

Please bring Scantron form 886-E (form has 100 MC and room for essay)!

If I were studying for this exam and wanted an A:

  • I would take the time to review everything on the blog starting here, including lecture notes and charts/graphs.
  • I would review each reading assignment, and make sure I could list its three main points, define its terms in my own words and/or give a partial quote.
  • I would go back and review each of the video study guides, making sure I could define key terms and concepts of each.
  • Then I would look at the Final Study Guide, and quiz myself from it, making sure I can explain what each term means in my own words, and how it is related to course themes.

Happy studying, and be sure to get your sleep!

Last minute questions

Stef asked:
I’m lost in the final study guide, can’t define high/ low technology, what does that mean?

Remember we talked about how a pencil is technology?  Using a pencil to write a paper is a “low technology” way, compared to using a “high technology” computer word processing program to write a paper.  We tend to assume that “high tech” is always better, but that’s not always the case.  Review the article by Keller in your reader, “Intro: Discovering & Doing, Science & Technology.”

About APA style and papers

Kelly asked a good question about APA style details:

Click to see full size sample of APA style

You do NOT have to write an abstract or use the “Discussion” heading in your paper (those are meant for longer research papers).  You may use the running title if you like…with or without is fine.

I am mostly concerned that you format your bibliography in APA style (see image for sample or here).  Do NOT forget to spend time formatting your bibliography properly – it’s the FIRST thing I look at when I read your paper  – do you have the minimum of four academic sources (preferably two books and two journal articles), and is it properly formatted with all necessary info?

Another question:  Title page and bibliography do not count in the 5-page requirement!

Details details – Read this, really

Hey folks,

  • The handout for the “Iron presentation” is here.
  • Monday we will have the quiz, and then our final four presentations.  Note:  the quiz is on the first three days of student presentations AND our last lecture (11/17) on Consumption (including Story of Electronics video).
  • We will talk about the final exam on Monday, but if you want to get a head start on studying, here’s a general study guide. We will devote our last class on Wednesday to reviewing for the final exam, so don’t miss it.
  • If you would like to review the quizzes we’ve taken this semester, you can come by my office in DMH 239A – I’ll have a table where you can sit and look at all of the quizzes and take notes.  If you’d like to do this, drop me an email to make an appointment.
